Ill Manors print: branding

DVD Cover

  1. One of the main things that make me identify the print text is the actual title of the movie, 'Ill Manors'. As you can see, the DVD cover shows the title of the text in the centre and is written in large. Another central image that I can see is the main protagonist behind the movie title with his arm overlapping the title - he is also holding a gun in his hand. This helps me identify that it is a DVD cover because of the fact that it has the main character of the movie and also, it gives the movie rating on the bottom left of the print as it does in mostly every single DVD cover. This gives the audience awareness of what the content may be in the movie.
  2. One of the main things on this cover made it help me identify that it is related to Ill Manors in the gun. The movie Ill Manors has a lot of action codes which is then related to crime which is related to danger. Therefore, the gun itself is an action code, as it is a symbol of death or someone getting injured. Another thing that helped identify the film was the way the title of the movie was layed out. The part where it says 'Ill' looks as if it is sized into a block of flats which is what people in the movie live it. This therefore straight away tells the audience that this may be in a ghetto area and something bad will happen in this movie.
  3. Another similar sort of print work, that is related to this particular print work would be the soundtrack album. The soundtrack album and the movie have both got the same name, 'Ill Manors'. This is a synergy because more than one piece of the artists work has got a link which is being the title of both pieces of work.

Billboard Poster

  1. Another thing that I have identified in this poster is the main character and the name of the movie. This is similar to the DVD cover as it presents the same character in each and the layout of the word 'Ill' has been presented in a block of flats again. This is very powerful for a print like a billboard poster because these posters are what the movie would mainly advertise in key areas, e.g. on a main road where many driver pass by everyday. A popular character like 'Riz Ahmed' would help attract the movie as he is popular and has got a reasonably large fan base. Another key convention shown in this billboard poster is the 'tagline' shown at the top and in the centre. This tagline is extremely powerful for any print work because it gives a feel to the audience of what the movie is about or what the audience may think it is about as sometimes, the production company may not make a tagline as obvious.
  2. As you can see in the middle of the poster, it shows the main character vomiting onto the movie title. This can show the audience that this is going to be a disturbing movie which may contain many disturbing things as another link to this is that the movie rating is 18 and can show anything, e.g. swear words, violence, sexual actvities etc. But in this case, the character is vomiting onto the title or some may think of it as a block of flats which can suggest that the city itself can be dangerous.
  3. This is linked to the DVD cover as it shows the same layout of the way the movie title is typed up and how they have used the same character in both prints and how both of them have been centralised.

Billboard Poster
  1. The main convention that I have spotted in this print work is the consistency in how the print has been designed. As you can see, it started of with a triangle at the bottom which is also centred. This shows the main protagonist yet again (Riz Ahmed). Then it expands into bigger triangles which then creates a pattern and in each space, it shows different characters from the movie. Also, in the centre of the print (rule of thirds), it yet again shows the same layout/design of the movie title as it does in every other print that I have described above. Another thing that has been shown is the ratings that have been given by different people which therefore gets the viewers attention as it is a print advertisement document and it needs to show the audience ratings. For example, if one of the audience favourite actors gave it a 5 star rating, they would most likely watch the movie as they've been attracted by their favourite actors etc.
  2. The contrast between black & red relates to the movie itself as the movie has been located in a dull area. The dark parts in the print would relate to when the different crimes are happening and the red colours link to blood; This tells the audience that this is going to be very brutal and scary. However, this particular print hasn't given the movie rating.
  3. The synergy that this print can relate to is the DVD cover as it gives ratings of the movie by different people/company and it has presented the movie title in the same way, ALWAYS - Big, white and in a style of a 'block of flats'.

Ill Manors: Print platform

Men's Health Interview

  1. The audience that is attracted to this particular magazines are men that are aged between 14-40 and are men from the physcographic groups such as Apirers. This magazine is about men's and their health which also relates to having a good shaped body. In this interview, Plan B talked about how he was overweight and whenever he would walk into a room, he was have a loss in confidence. Therefore, he decided to change his whole appearance and started working out. This links to the physcographic group of 'aspirers' as it shows that people are trying to seek for a 'status'. Linking this back to that interview, people are looking for status as they want to have a healthy body and not to be overweight so that people can also acknowledge it and therefore, those particular people wouldn't lose confidence.
  2. The magazine interview is educating the audience about their own personal identification and it is shown through the different tips that have been given by Plan B.
  3. One of the main things that I noticed of the print was the medium close up shot of Plan B as he is wearing the suit which instantly tells the audience that he is the main star of this article.
  4. Linking back to all the other points, the main thing that kept the readers going in the article is about the tips that he was giving the interviewer. He was talking about how if you don't feel confident about your self appearance then you should do something about it. Therefore, this got the audience reading because as the interview went on, it tell the users what sort of situation he was in and how he change when he took action and solved his problems.
  5. The similarities between the article and Plan B himself is all of the things that he is using in the pictures, e.g. the behind the scenes equipment that is shown in the second picture.

NME Magazine interview

  1. The target  audience that I would give for this specific interview would be males that are aged between 16-28. This is because of the extreme use in bad language and the hand gestures given in the final picture of the article. The psychographic groups that I would put the target audience into would be also aspirers because of the fact that they would want to make a change to the different beliefs shown by everyone (ideologies).
  2. People can relate to this because what Plan B went through,  some one else may have to and therefore understand what he was going through.
  3. The different codes and conventions that I found in this article were the different quotes that Plan B was saying in his interview. In the pictures, it also shown another medium close up of Plan  B which stated that he was the main character.
  4. One of the way it kept the viewers interested was when Plan B told the interviewer the release dates of both his music and film which was called 'Ill Manors'.
  5. In every single broadcast examples we have seen, he has always been determined to do what he wants to do and this is exactly how he has described it in this interview.

Guardian interview

  1. The Guardian newspaper would have a younger audience as it shows what happened throughout Plan B's life and more of his fans, particularly young boys, would want to read this more than anyone else.
  2. The article shows the process of Ben Drew and this is known as 'personal identification'. This means that the audience may have the pleasure of this because some of the audience may have gone through the same process that Plan B may have gone through.
  3. The key conventions that I had found in this article were the different quotes that were used which was explaining Plan B's life in the past and how it was described using the long paragraphs which is in the way newspapers would be formatted in.
  4. One of the ways in which this article kept the viewers interested is mainly how they had described the life of Plan B since it showed that his life was abnormal and the article had so many different things to talk about Plan B.

Daily Mail review of Ill Manors

  1.  The target audience of this article would lie in the demographic group of A and B and some of C1 with the majority of the gender being female; This is a article which is strongly linked  to criticising the movie Ill Manors. The psychographic group that this would be involved with would be suceeders who are seeking 'status'; these different people want to tell everyone their views having putting it up on the internet.
  2. This article kept the audience entertained as it has a lot of negative things about the movie. One example was the it is a 'bad episode of EastEnders', which is a popular British soap. This keeps the viewer interested because it gave links to big brands that they may be aware of and may find this funny and therefore want to read on because the writer of the article may have made more links.
  3. The conventions of this article were the different pictures of scenes that were shown in the movie of Ill Manors
  4. In each paragraph, they were all very short and every single on of them had something different to say, in terms of ciriticising and therefore, the viewers wanted to carry on depending on if they were against the film.
  5. All  the pictures shown in the article were synergy's because they were all different parts of the movie, 'Ill Manors'.

DVD Extra

  1. Plan B told us that London is always portrayed in a glamorous way and how we need to tell the audience that this is not the case and how we need to show them the real side of London. He also said that he wanted the audience the understand the youths because they are portrayed in a negative way when they really aren't and it's just a typical stereotype.
  2. From the production process, we learnt that the production company initially had no money to make the movie and how they had to ask many companies to sponsor them. Also, the characters in the film was from a music video that went by the name of Michelle. Also, a lot of the characters that starred in the movie were unprofessional because Plan B thought that the only people that would be able to act those roles would be the ones who had lived through it everyday and know how it felt to be in those positions.
  3. The target audience for this would be the people who go against the kids that are doing wrong. This shows that they are being prejudiced and this could be the reason why the riots had happened.

Broadcast and Online

  1. SBTV is a multi-faceted company that is run by a small team of young people. They normally run their content on YouTube which is therefore accessible to everyone around the world. This company is mainly based around giving the viewers entertainment, e.g. interviewing famous people and also about music. Since this is all about music and entertainment, the target audience would be aged between 13-23. This is aged at a younger audience due to the fact that younger audience are more focused into their music and like to have a lot of fun rather than the older people.
  2. This specific interview is targeted at a younger audience because it shows the presenter of SBTV acting like a kid. For example, before he started to interview Plan B, he would be dancing to songs that were from a TV show which is also based for kids. Ayounger audience would appeal to this sort of presentation because to them, it seems entertaining which is what younger people enjoy and this is how it catches their attention.
  3. Plan B is presented as 'chilled out' and is sitting by himself and is fully concentrated on the work he is doing. In the interview, he talks about how he doesn't want to 'fail' and if he does he would look like a 'clown' to everyone. This links to the younger audience as it shows that he cares and wants to complete his film.

Television

  1. The Jonathan Ross show is a British chat show which is presented by Jonathan Ross. This is where he would get a variety of famous people onto his show on a Saturday night and talk to them about their careers and sometimes their personal life. This is aimed at anyone who watches movies because the people that come onto his show could be anyone. A specific type of person would be a middle aged working class man because most of the time no one would be doing anything on a Saturday night.
  2. The target audience for this specific interview would be between the ages of 14-25. This is simply because of the fact that the fans of Plan B lie between this age and these are the people would will want to watch him and get to know more about their 'favourite musician' etc.
  3. Yet again in this text, eh was presented as a funny and 'upfront' character who didn't keep anything to himself, e.g. the hand gestures towards  Nick Clegg.

Radio

  1. The average listening figures of people who listen to the BBC Radio 1 is around 10 million per week. However, they have started to lose the number of listeners every week due to the fact that there are other different radio shows that are around and they could be more appealing to the audience, e.g. they may be entertaining which leads to a younger audience.
  2. The target audience of BBC Radio 1 is between 15-29 because it engages a younger audience with the different distinctive musics they play.
  3. In the interview, Plan B started to talk about the following on how he had promoted the film 'Ill Manors': The release date, the music itself and the different characters
  4. The main representing of Plan be which we found in this interview was that he is very hardworking.

Ill Manors: TEDx lecture

1) Plan B/ Ben Drew has portrayed in his conference in Ted that young people have been given a bad name by the media. A lot of  the media believe that people from dysfunctional backgrounds are ones who causes violence. Ben Drew was also a person who was brought up in a dysfunction family, as he was kicked out of school in year 10 having not finished High School. He has a strong disbelief to different ideologies that are related to young people; Many people believe that young people are very dangerous people and all of them are the SAME. However, Ben Drew doesn't believe that and thinks that not everyone is the same and that everyone has their own way of living. He then started talking about the word 'chav' and how it had one meaning a long time ago and now it has a complete different meaning. People around the world believe chav's are people who live in Estates. However, Plan B believe that what the media are doing is wrong because this then gives people around the world a negative view on these people who live in the Estates due to the fact that they are poor.

2) Personally, the Tedx talk can lead between the ages between 13-30. This is because of the fact that he's talking about youths who live in the council estates which of course involves them too and 13 is around the age where young people would start to acknowledge different things. The demographics  that I believe that are mostly involved are 'working class' (Class E or D) males which leads to stereotypes; Many people believe these particular men can be very dangerous and this is why Ben Drew has talked on Tedx, to tell the audience that these people are not and yet again, what the media is doing is extremely wrong and shouldn't talk negatively them. In addition, the physcographic groups that are involved in the video are either 'Aspirer's' and 'Struggler's'. Aspirers are a group that are seeking status. In other words, they are wanting to make a name for themselves. Linking it back to the video, Aspiriers would be the young 'working class' male that are wanting attention mainly from the government and politicians. The other group, sturgglers, are seeking escape. This links to what Ben Drew is talking about because he talks about these different people that have been criticized and those people didn't want to be in that situation. Therefore, the are wanting to get out of that criticism and make a new start for themselves.

3) Linking the video to the media, Ben Drew believes that the media always talk negatively about young people who live in council estates, especially in the newspaper. This is when he starts to talk about the word 'chav' and how people nowadays believe that this is how to describe all young people. He now believes that the word 'chav' means 'Council House and Violence'. From looking at Cohen's theory of moral panics, it talks about how moral panics back then are where members of society and cultures become morallly sensitized. This can link to young 'black' people in the media as the media occasionally brand young 'black' people as violent people when most of the time it isn't even true; The media just like to blame them and that's when the citizens have bad feeling about them.

Ill Manors broadcast: music video analysis

Media Forms

In the video, this has been portrayed as a typical music video through the usage of fast camera movements and having that handheld moving camera effect too. This is shown in more of a modern music video as many different artists who make a music video would use this effect because the fast movements can be related to how fast the music, itself, is actually going. If it was fast, the camera movement will be fast paced and if the music had a slow motion, the camera will most likely be on a tripod and will take more longer to cut to the next scene. Also, a lot of people would think this a typical rap music video instead of anything else because rappers like to get their words out more quickly than the slow, opera like singers which is another reason on why the fast movement is being used. Therefore, this is a typical music video because of the fact that everything that is happen in the video is going at a fast pace and the hand held movement which could bring the audience to the music video itself; Bringing them closer to the lyrics of the song.

Another way in which this is a typical music video is due to the fact that it would mostly show the artist of the song and he'd be the one who would sing the song in the music video. Mostly every single music video would do this because it shows the audience who the person it was that sung this song. This is done because no one knows the song better than the person who had wrote it themselves, therefore this is why this is typical.

The final reason why this is a typical music video is because of the facial expressions shown by everyone in the music video. Anger and aggression. This is typical, especially in the rap industry, because people who rap like to talk about their past and people who do, do that have not had pleasant pasts and which is why they have those angry faces on. But also, you'll get some music videos where people are angry due to the settings of where they are and the words they may be saying, e.g. swear words. Therefore, the reason why I believe that this is typical mainly due to the fact that every rap artist would use swear words which defines aggression and anger.

Media Representation

One of the ways the music video represented the London riots was across the different facial expressions and the chaos shown in the Britain by the characters. The London riots were about thousands of young teenagers and adults who would start looting because they were angry due to the government. The government didn't given anyone what they wanted which therefore relates to the expressions given by the characters in the music video because they are trying to tell the audience that this is why people started looked; they were angry with the government. In the video, it showed the bad parts of London which gets the viewers thinking about how London is being expressed and therefore, leading to the media giving negative comments about them.

Another way in which the video expressed London riots is through the different politicians and government people that were shown in the music video. The London riots all happened due to the government and how a black man was killed due to his race and how the government wouldn't do anything about it. So, in the music video Plan B would show parts of the politicians where they were getting 'bullied' by the protesters. An example is how a protester had thrown an egg at the shoulder of this one politician and then the politician retaliated back. Therefore, this relates to the riots because the riot was all because of the citizens and the government and how the citizens didn't get what they wanted, e.g. jobs which is one of the main reasons why Plan B was shooting his movie in a 'ghetto' area.

Media Audiences

In the music video, this gives the audience the pleasure of 'personal identification' but yet relates to stereotypes from the adults. In the music video, it shows a lot of younger people which gives the impression to all audiences that young people are the ones who are to blame for causing chaos in the cities etc. Some young people may be offended by this due to the fact that this doesn't relate to them but yet, many people would still class this young, innocent people as 'trouble-makers'. One the other hand, a lot of people can relate to this because of the fact that they may be apart of gangs and from a 'ghetto' neighborhood. This is stereotypical because of the fact that many people may not be like the actors in the music video but still get blamed for it, due to the fact they are young and may look like trouble.

This music video also gives the pleasure to the audience because  of the political references that have been shown in this video. Many viewers extremely like it when different members of the government and all the politicians have something bad to them. Therefore, in the music video, there were different parts where something bad happened, e.g. when one of the politicians had an egg thrown on his shoulder by a protester. This gives the audience pleasure because of the fact that a member of parliament or someone who the UK citizens don't like, had something bad happening to them and therefore, gave them the pleasure because they had gotten angry and retaliated back towards the protester which then had that possibility that the government person would have gotten into trouble which is good news for the audience.

Finally, this whole music video was made to create awareness about the young people who live in council estates and tell the audience that they are not people who they think can be lethal. Some of the audience may watch the movie and say nothing towards it due to the fact that they are a fan of Ben Drew and just like the way he writes his music. On the other hand, the other audience may watch the video and look deep into it because they believe that this has a strong meaning towards young people and may think even more negatively of the young people, which is stereotypical. This is linked to the 'Uses and Gratification' theory. The use of fast pace and it being very dramatic, brought the audience attention to the video because it seems quite enjoyable to watch as it keeps the audiences eyes glued to the screen and don't want to miss  the next scene, due to  the fact its going at a fast pace.

Media Institution

The music video helped produce the film due to the fact that the artist of the song was also the director of the movie (Plan B). This helped promote the movie because Plan B is a successful song writer and since he is, this would mean that he has a lot of fans and if those particular fans found out that 'Plan B' was planning to make a movie from a successful song of his, he would've caught those audiences attention and therefore, those audiences would be wanted to watch the movie. This was a gamble as he had never made a movie in his life but since he knew that he had a large number of fans, this would be a big factor to promoting this video as he may have through some of his social media sites. An example would be Twitter and all the fans that follow him could have spread the word around to their friends etc.

Another way it helped promote the film is through all the different synergy's that there are between the film and music video. First of all, the name of the music is the exact same name as the movie which obviously helps promote the film because the music itself was very successful. Another synergy is the characters. Some of the characters that are in the film were firstly in the music video and some of those characters a quite successful because they have also been in previous movies that are also successful. This means that those actors fans would want to watch the movie and therefore will increase the income of the movie. An example of an actor is Ed Skrein.

The final reason why the music video helps promote the movie is through e-media. Many people around the world have access to mostly every single website in the world. So, if one is able to access it, for example on YouTube, then those particular users may spread the word around which the message can then get sent to many different people around the world. In addition, on Twitter there is a 'retweet' option and if many people start to retweet the poster or any sort of reference to the movie on Twitter, then more people would be aware that this movie has or is being released and therefore, this is how the directors can start promoting this movie. Through the internet.

Here is an example of some of the reviews given to Ben Drew:
  •  Not since the golden years of Stock, Aitken and Waterman have we lived through a time when pop music has served such a shallow functional role – from ‘I Gotta Feeling’ pop that’s made to uplift, to ‘Someone Like You’ pop that’s made to reminisce, to the all-consuming Guetta Lolpop Mafia and their quest to make us dance. People who keep bleating that there’s no anti-Establishment sentiment in the charts any more forget that being political largely prevents you from being pop. There’s plenty of social commentary in music, but when was the last time you heard Killer Mike in the Live Lounge? We mention all this because Plan B is, or was, a pop star. His last album ‘The Defamation of Strickland Banks’ was a soulful, if slightly hammy, concept album, which made Ben Drew a commercial success. Trendy dads were his main source of income. He was sponsored by a pear cider. Above all, it was easy on the ears. ‘Ill Manors’ is anything but.

Ill Manors Film Review

Ill Manors is a urban crime drama which has been based in London. The title had come from a well know artist called Plan B which was based on the London riots that happened in 2011. It had many different famous actors in the movie, e.g. Riz Ahmed, who played the role of Aaron and Ed Skrein, who had played a role as Ed. Ed and Aaron are both good friends in the movie as they had both been bought into foster care when they were little as their parents couldn't be able to look after them.

At the beginning of the movie, it started of with Aaron and Ed who were standing on the road and giving out drugs to everyone they saw. However, this one suspicious person came up to them and asked if he could have some drugs. The main thing about this was that Ed didn't know this person because he had never come to him for drugs before and then found out that he was a policeman. Therefore, this led to him and Aaron running away from the officer and one of his other colleges who was in the car around the corner. However, while they were running away, the two main protagonists came to the locked gate-door and only had time for one of them to jump over. Therefore, Aaron jumped over and Ed gave him his phone and remaining drugs. To the viewers, they could already imagine that this movie was going to be a very brutal movie since there were already police involved in the beginning of the movie.

Also, another part in the beginning showed another man who went by the character name of 'Kirby'. This character was known to be one of the 'best' drug dealers and makers in the whole of East London. Sometimes, he would normally give this little child who went by the name of 'Chris', the drugs which he would then sell on to the others. However, in the basement where he would make the drugs, a police officer came and had arrested him for 15 odd years. When he came out, everything was okay for him because he knew that the once little boy, Chris, has it all covered.

Throughout the middle of the movie, there would be many different dramatically scenes that happened and had all linked up together very well. This one boy who wanted to get involved into gang violence had been given the mission to kill 'Kirby' by his so called 'gang leader'. The reason he had to kill him is because 'Kirby' had made that gang leader, strip naked because of the fact that he was selling drugs in Kirby's area. Therefore, got the teenager to do his 'dirty work'. So, that teenager went to the house of Kirby's. Instead of killing Kirby with the first bullet, he would accidentally shoot a girl who was also Kirby's house because Kirby had told her that she was pretty and wanted her to go to this 'fake' photoshoot company. After all of that, it turned out that that girl who Chris' sister and then would instantly get revenged on the two people who were involved in her manslaughter.

At the end of the movie, Ed had died as he has fallen of the pub that was caught on fire; He was trying to save a baby who had survived but he didn't. This shows that Ed's true colours were shown at the end of the movie because we, the audience, that that Ed was this monster because he gave this girl to several men for prostitution because he needed money for the girl to pay back losing his phone. However, we realised that Ed was a general nice person because he gave up his life to save a little child where as he could've just left her in the burning building and let her burn and rot. Also, we realise that Aaron was the most nicest person in the movie because of the fact that he was always there to help others out and even if it was against his own friends.

Ill Manors broadcast platform: trailer analysis

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?

The typical codes and conventions of film trailers are: The release date, Title, Todorov's equilibrium and disequilibrium, the non-diegetic music, the tagline and all of the behind the scene people who had worked on the film even including the actors.

How are trailers distributed

Nowadays, trailers are normally distributed very differently compared to when they were distributed many years ago. Back then, trailers would normally been shown in a cinema before any movie had started. This would allow the audience to see the latest movies that would be coming out and will pay more to the cinemas to watch it. Nowadays, trailers are distributed in many different ways. One of them is that they have been published on different social media websites, e.g. YouTube and even Twitter.
How does the Ill Manors trailer use trailer conventions?

In the movie Ill Manors, the trailer conventions they had used are the following:
  • The release date of the movie
  • The non-diegetic sound in the background when parts of the movie have been shown.
  • The plot of the movie, e.g. Drugs
  • Props, e.g. guns.
  • The main characters of the movie
  • The setting (Ghetto area)
Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

In my opinion, the target audience for this movie is people who are aged between 15 and 25 and particularly male over female. This is because it is an action based movie and more younger males who enjoy movies like these maybe due to the fact some of them may live similar lifestyles to the main characters in the movie. This movie, just by looking at the trailer, has given many different types of clues about the movie. One of them being the drugs. This suggests that the setting of the movie will most likely be in a ghetto area because many people in those types of areas would do illegal things and do not care about what they do. Another thing that may tell the audience that this movie is a 'ghetto' movie is that there are many different scenes where a gun has been shown. This could instantly tell the audience that people have been betrayed by others and those people could even be close family or friends. In the middle of the trailer, it shows the  director of the movie in a short cameo scene where is driving a taxi and the audience are able to see his face in the rear view mirror. The release date was shown at the end of the trailer which is as any other typical trailer shown.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing

Through the charatcers, there has been shown a lot of anger and violence which obviously states that this is to do with crime and action. Also, the fact that the use a gun and is mostly filmed in a dark and discrete area can suggest that it could also be linked to horror. However, the audience will obviiously know that there isn't no horror because there isn't anything in the trailer that would make anyone jump etc.
