Psychographics: pair presentations

1)

Psychographic group:
Explorers

Names : Thomas & Dora

Where do they work/study?

They're currently taking a gap year from University.

What do they do in their spare time?

During their spare time, they usually travel, they live in London from abroad and go to different types of theme parks.

Now suggest their media consumption:

Print: What newspapers/magazines does your group read (if any)? Is this on paper or tablet?

The read Travel Magazines and The Guardian Newspaper to find out what is happening in and around the world.

Broadcast: What TV programmes/channels do your group watch? Radio stations? TV package – Freeview or Sky? Films?

They watch the National Geographical Channel, Discovery Channel and watch the news.

E-Media: What technology do they own? What websites do they visit (if any)?

iPads, Navigational systems and Smartphones.

2)

After taking the test, the two results I got was 'Control and Survival'. In my opinion, I agree with these one of the photographic groups which is 'control' because control is all about being successful and that is one of my aims in life; to become a successful person. However, I disagree with the other group because survival is all about the resigned people, who are mainly the elderly people which I am not .

Narrative

This clip is from the first Godfather which was made in 1972. In this clip, I believe that the main protagonist, who was sitting down with the cat, can have many different types of roles from just looking at this scene. At the beginning, he looked more like a hero because one of the other people that was in that room, whispered in his ear that 'he wanted someone dead' but the main protagonist refused to do that, which is why he looked like the good person in the film. However, as the scene went on, he sounded more like a villain because he would've helped him, if he that dispatcher had been more of a friend to the main protagonist. but at the end of the scene, he looked like he would've considered helping him which does make him look like a villain and a powerful person.

The action code to this clip is whether or not, the main protagonist is going to help the dispatcher and help kill the person or do something that that person?

Todorov's theory of disequilibrium can be used in this clip as the dispatcher cannot do his own task by himself, so he needs help from Don (main protagonist). Therefore, the new equilibrium is that he can overcome this problem by having that small probability of the main protagonist helping him.

This is a recent clip from a soap that comes on BBC One by the name of EastEnders. In this clip, it is about the main protagonist being by himself in his own garage and is approached by this old man and these two intimidating men. This video looks quite straight forward as the three people on the left hand side are the villains and the man on the right is almost as a princess. I think that the people on the left are the villains because the camera shot of when the people entered the garage, it didn't show their faces; It just showed their legs and one of their hands closing the door. This suggests that they do not want to show their face to the audience as they want to build up the suspense of who it may be and they did - they were people who looked like they were going to hurt the main protagonist

The enigma code to this is what will happen to the main protagonist because in this episode, it just stopped at this part and didn't show what they did. This could also be the action code; Are they going to beat this main character up with the tools (props) that are in the garage.

Todorov's theory of disequilibrium can be used in this clip too, as the main protagonist needs help because the odds of him escaping or even winning the fight is highly unlikely. Also, there is no new equilibrium in this clip as there ending of this clip was left on a cliffhanger.

This clip is from James Bond, 007 Quantum of Solace in 2008. As you can see, the main protagonist (007) is trying to chase the villain because of something that he may have done and 007  who is the spy is trying to do his duty. James Bond, who is the main protagonist of this film, has many different types of roles in this movie, as he can be the hero since he is trying to capture the people in wrong and he can also be the helper as he is working under a secret spy company.

The action code of this clip is the gun as it senses violence and could lead to someone being injured or even dying. Also, the enigma code of this clip is what has happened to the person who got shot at the end.

The disequilibrium of this clip is when the main protagonist was in the massive truck and didn't have access to the gun and shooting the villain and could've lead to him getting shot. The new equilibrium is that he used his initiative and went under this building which could've lead to him capturing him.

Institution: CoolBrands research

The five brands that I have picked from the CoolBrands list are the following:

  • Apple
  • Nike
  • Aston Martin
  • YouTube
  • Netflix
Apple
1) What I like about Apple is that they introduce something new at least every 6 months which makes it quite fascinating as they are a big brand and many people would buy their new products because of how big it is.

2) Apple is a technology company which are based in California and was founded by Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne and Steve Wozniak in 1976. There most common product is, of course, iPhone which is produced roughly every 6 months. Apple associate in self - importance as they want to have the better products out of all their rivals, e.g. Samsung.

3) This brand made the list because this is one of the largest companies in the world and having an Apple gadget is what everyone has to have as it fits under the 'cool' category.

Nike
1) I chose this brand because Nike is associated with sports and I like playing different types of sports and also, I own quite a lot of different Nike items which is why I chose them.

2) Nike is an American company which sell products such as trainers and sports equipment etc. They are based in Oregon and is found by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight in 1971. they also are sponsered with high profile athletes, e.g. Footballers. Personally, I think that Nike can be classified in the group of Art. This is because every single product they make would always have a different sort of pattern on it; Whether it is a t-shirt or trainers.

3) This brand made the list because everyone wears Nike, especially the younger audience do and it is also worn worldwide.

Aston Martin
1) I like Aston Martin because I find that the quality of their cars are always excellent, especially the interior because its always leather and luxurious.

2) Aston Martin is a British manufacturer of luxury sports cars and grand tourers. It was founded by Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford in 1913. It was associated with touring and also introduced in every single James Bond film (DB5 Model). This brand is associated with Rich because all of the Aston Martin cars and super expensive and need to be extremely rich if you want to casually drive one of these vehicles on the road.

3) This brand also made the list as it is one of the best British Brands ever and one of the most longest brands; it always meets the customers standards too.

YouTube
1) I like YouTube and chose it because it always keeps me entertained when ever I have nothing to do.

2) YouTube is a video sharing website which is based in California and was founded by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley and Jawed Karim in 2005. This website allows anyone all over the world to upload their own content onto YouTube for everyone's entertainment. It started to grow even more in 2011/2012, where more and more people started to upload more contents or video games and even vlogging. People who upload the videos would most likely want to have successful careers in YouTube as they would want to become famous and make a lot of money out it.

3) This is one of the coolest brands in Britain because there are loads of different British YouTubers which everyone in Britain watches.

Netflix
1) I chose Netflix because it is one of the newest brand which is coming up in the market due to all the things it streams online and I am a big fan of Netflix as I stream it everyday.

2) Netflix is a on demand internet steaming media which is available to viewers in many different parts of the world. It was found in 1997 which is also based in California. They stream all different genres of movies and even TV shows.

3) This is one of the coolest brands in Britain because mostly everyone in Britain watches it as it has that one month free trial and it is also relatively cheap.

Blog feedback learner response

WWW: Your blog contains some excellent work that shows what a good start you’ve made to A Level Media. Your contributions in lessons have shown this too. Your choice of text for the advert analysis is absolutely fascinating and a really relevant media issue in the USA (gun violence and control). I’m pleased to see also that your media consumption of TV and film is pretty extensive – this will help
you aim for the top grades.

EBI: I’ve picked up a few things to work on. Firstly, your analysis of the 50 Cent RBK advert is good
with some interesting insights but despite the excellent choice of text your second analysis is very
short. You need to be writing in sufficient depth and detail to access the highest grades – that means
picking out 2/3 aspects and really exploring their impact on an audience in detail. The other aspect
to work on would be brand values – based on your latest piece of work, have another look at brand
values and how they summarise an organisation. For example, surely Coca Cola wouldn’t summarise
their brand with the word ‘sugar’?

LR: Reflect on your first month of AS Media. What is your strongest piece of work so far? What is
your weakest? What specific skills or knowledge do you need to develop over the rest of the course?

In my opinion, I think that my best piece of work was the second picture in the Reebok advert. This is because I went into a lot of detail with it and compared the two people in that advert well. For example, I said why is a little girl allowed to hold a gun but at the same time, why can't they read a book. Also, I justified my point too so this is why I believe is my best piece of work. However, I need to add another paragraph about if it's a dominant reading or preferred etc.

On the other hand, the piece that I think isn't that brilliant is the recent one I did about choosing the 5 different brand values. I think this because I didn't link any of the ideas with each other and when I talked about all the different lines of appeal, I didn't really explain it properly; I just stated it and left it as that. So, my aim would be to go back to that piece of work and explain the line of appeals a little bit more and change the 'one words' which represented what the companies stand for.

In the rest of the course I would like to learn a lot of things. However, the first thing I would like to do is get to know everything about GCSE Media, e.g. learn all the different types of key words and how to put the into context. This is because I never did GCSE Media because my initial A Level choice was A Level Photography and this was a back up and therefore, I need more practise in terms of learning all the different key words, e.g. what enigma code means etc.

Institution: Brand values

Puma
Puma is a well known brand which is located and sponsored by many different companies and sponsorship around the world. It's known as a childhood brand because as a kid, you would like to wear sports clothes because that's what people are mainly into back then. However, this brand could also be for the elite people because this is a typical brand that footballers or any type of sports athletes may wear because the team they're playing for could be sponsored by Puma and it could also link to another line of appeal being art because of the patterns they use.

Puma is a brand which is more based on appearance.

Quality

Coca Cola
Coca Cola is one of the most populist brands in the whole world, as mainly every country would sell coca cola. Personally, I think that this brand is linked to many different lines of appeals but the main one would have to be Happy Families because coca cola is normally served when everyone gets together for a celebration or even when it is a normal, casual day. It is also known as self importance and pride because over the past decades, coca cola have rivals such as Pepsi and their aim is to be better than Pepsi and are yet remaining as the best since they have been introducing different flavors to their brand value.

The Coca Cola brand is always about the quality.

Sugar

Levi's
Levi's is a brand that makes jeans trousers and also denim jackets. They are very popular as they are one of the first brands which made these types of cloth wears and their main priority has always been about Beautiful women. This brand is all about giving 'looks' to people as the dress sense that Levi's give is mostly formal casual. Another line of appeal is that it's for the rich, luxurious lifestyle; if you wanted to get a pair of Levi's jeans, they would cost roughly £70 and the denim jackets would occasionally cost more than their best selling product (jeans).

This Brand is all about quality on their items.

Tidy

Nike
Nike is another brand that is known for their sports wear, which is similar to Puma but there is more to it. Firstly, the brand is all about successful careers. Most people who intend to buy clothes from Nike are people who are from the working class and it is a sign of motivation for them. One of the reasons why I think that this is motivation is because Nike products can be fairly expensive at times. Therefore, these people who come from a poorer background would need to motivate themselves somehow in order to buy these items or even grow out of them because this brand is more about childhood.

This brand is all about motivation.

Desire

SONY
Sony is a well known Japanese brand which is more of a childhood brand. In everyone's childhood, everyone would always play on their PlayStation and some people still do till this date. Therefore, I think that this type of brand plays a big part in someones childhood as it would keep them entertained and allow time to fly by. Also, it is for comedy and humour because sometimes when playing a game, it could go wrong and it would be a great laugh, especially if anyone was playing a game with their friends.

A brand which is all about keeping everyone entertained.

Year 12: Institution feedback and learner response

1)

2)
·     Good visual starter, quick but engages class successfully.
·     Quite general detail on Sony- I’d like this to focus more on the media side- games, films and music rather the hardware.
·      Size and influence is communicated effectively.
·     Superb slide of synergy talking about the cross- promotion of different Sony brands and products. This is a really strong point and very important for this key concept.
·     Lesson ends point and very suddenly – a final activity or plenary might help here to encourage people to remember certain aspects.
·     Also would have been mice to include some big Sony Films/ artists.

3)
WWW
- We didn't have more than 20 words on each slide of the power point.
- Handouts were very detailed
- Our synergy was clear and we went into a lot of detail when explaining it; even though we only had pictures, everyone knew what we were talking about.

EBI
- We should have talked a little bit more about Sony's PlayStation.
- We needed a plenary at the end, so everyone can at least remember one thing from what we taught them.
- Spend a little more time on the starter.

4) Trinity Mirror - They are a Daily Record who were made in 1933 and are the first Newspaper company to carry coloured pictures.
BSkyB - is a British telecommunications company which serves the United Kingdom
News Corporation - A multinational mass media corporation which is based in New York and found by Rupert Murdoch
Sony - A Japanese media company that creates different types of technology, e.g. PlayStation and Televisions.
Vivendi - A French Company which is equivalent to Sky.
Time Warner - A U.S version of Virgin Media which is held in the UK.
Viacom - Another global mass media company which own TV programs, for example MTV.

5)
BBC
The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) are a British Mass media which are based in London. It is the oldest broadcasting group and the second largest in the world. It was found on the 18th October 1922 by a man called John Reith.
The BBC own a variety of different programs (BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, BBC News, BBC Parliment, CBBC and CBeebies). The main channel they have is of course BBC One and what usually happens with programs on BBC is that if they have just recently started, they would be on either BBC Two or Three and then work their way up depending on the progress they have made. BBC One's most watched and successful program is Eastenders which comes on four days a week.
BBC also have another channel called BBC Worldwide which is available in a variety of different countries, e.g. America.
This was the first free view channel there ever was in the UK and then came the others, for example ITV.

The Walt Disney Company
The Walt Disney Company is another American Mass Media corporation which is based in California and was found by Walt Disney and Roy Disney.
Disney is a company that own the ABC broadcast television channel which have different type of network channels for example Disney Channel and ESPN.
ESPN is where all the american sports usually are shown and during the late 2000's, they would show some British football on it.
Their media network was found in 2004.
They have made an enormous amount of movies which started in the late 1930's and still make all sorts of movies, for example, they made the movie Frozen which was a really good movie which didn't come out as a 'flop'. Most of their movies and series are targeted at little kids, for example the movie frozen. They have also got movies which are planned to come out in the future, which is most likely going to be a success as all of their other 145 movies have been.

Comcast
Comcast is an American multinational mass media company and is the largest broadcasting and largest cable company in the world by revenue. The products they associate in are cable TV, Broadband internet, Franchising sports and many more things based in media. It is based in Philadelphia and was founded in 1963 by Ralph Roberts, Daniel Aaron and Julian Brodsky. Comcast own a lot of different networks with their main one being NBC which is an entertainment network which covers many different programs, such as sports and news which is, of course, based in America. Their most viewed network on TV is Character Welcome and also WWE Raw which is a wrestling entertainment show which comes on three times a week and maybe four times depending on if there is a paper view going on.
