Representation: Photoshop collages

The place that I decided to make a dominant and alternative collage for is London because I believe that there are loads f stereotypes in London and most of them, I think are very untrue.

Representation: Blog task

The clip that I have chosen for this task is East is East. In this clip, it shows different types of groups which will be listed below and will show what if they're dominant or alternative and the stereotypes:

  • The Parents
The stereotype in this clip about the parents is that they are Pakistani and will organised an arrange marriage for their children. This is a stereotype because it is would typical Pakistani and Indian parents do for their children. Therefore, this is known as dominant because it sticking with this particular stereotype.

  • The group of young Men
The stereotype of these young men is that they usually like to have fun by drinking alcohol and this is a stereotype because this is exactly how most young men behave when they're are out with their mates and for this reason, this stereotype is known as a dominant. However, some people might be civilized and not behave like this as some people do in this clip, therefore they are then known as alternatives.

  • The young boy
In this clip, we see the young boy behaving quite rude which is alternative because a usual young boy wouldn't behave like this; they would most likely be really well behaved and very polite which is definitely going against what this boy is doing the clip.

  • The Pakistani Family
This family has come from Pakistan to England to live the normal life and the son is trying to fit in as a normal British person. However, his parents are restricting him by getting him an arranged marrage which doesn't normally happen when living in England. Therefore, this shows that it's dominant and the stereotype is that Pakistani parents always want their children's to get an arrange marrage.

Dependency theory

What do YOU primarily use the media for: entertainment or information? (Or something else)?
Personally, I use the media for entertainment especially when I have nothing to do. For example, whenever I'm at home sitting down and doing nothing, I would normally go onto twitter to look at what is happening in the footballing world and the news etc. Or I would go onto a messaging app, e.g. WhatsApp and talk to different people.

To what extent do you feel we are dependent on the media?
I think that we are dependent on the media until we get bored of using that specific type of media or if we have something else to do which isn't linked to the media, e.g. cooking or going out to do different sports etc.

Has our dependence on the media changed over the last 10 years? How?
I think that over the past 10 years, the media has developed massively. If you were looking at the early 2000's, not that many people would look at the media because nothing really existed or was that popular apart from magazines, television or newspapers. However, nowadays most of the people in the world would use different types of media every single day since there is more things to look at now, e.g. Twitter and Facebook. Also, we can now send messages to different people around the world via our mobile phones and even the internet.

Read this Telegraph article – does this support Dependency theory? What is your personal opinion on this issue?

This article is showing that people in the modern day cannot live without their 'gadgets' because it shows that this is one of the only things that they have to entertain themselves. In my opinion, I think that it is okay to have these different gadgets on you all the time because like me, it is a way of finding out what is happening around the world and if this is the only way people think are motivated to find out what's happening (by looking at the gadgets) then I believe that this is a good thing and having these gadgets is extremely beneficial as it is making the people alert at all times.

Audience theory: blog tasks

Hypodermic Needle Model
1) This article is talking about how the violent video games, e.g. GTA, can have an affect on the younger audience by making them more aggressive. It is also stating that is has a factor on encouraging them to be more violent due to the video games.

2)

As you can see from the front page of the newspaper, the main headline is that a 15 year old kid had hacked a mobile provider, Talk Talk. However, when the went in depth on this story line, they started to talk about how this 15 year old kid was playing violent video games and rarely leaves his room. The reason why this newspaper company may be criticized is because those two different headings and subheading have no connection between one another. At one point it talks about hacking and the next minute, they start to talk about violent video games and how the 15 year old doesn't leave his room which has no link at all.

Two-step Flow Model
The two step flow model is about how the media has a direct influence on the people today. In my opinion, I think that the two-step flow model is more suitable today than it was when the whole topic started because the media has become more and more popular now than the past. For example, in the past, there were only a couple of TV channels but now there are thousands that people can watch from. Therefore, I beleive the media now have much more they can talk about and be influenced by.

2) The YouTuber is known to be the best PC gamer around and the reason why he belongs in the two-step flow model is because many people may get an idea from this YouTuber and may want to follow his path because of how successful he is.

3)
